Jerusalem Botanical Gardens
Jerusalem, Israel, Israel
The Jerusalem Botanical Gardens (JBG) is the largest botanical garden in Israel and the Middle East, located in the Nayot neighborhood on the southeastern edge of the Givat Ram campus of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem near the Knesset, Israel Museum, and National Library.
Opened to the public in 1985 as a successor to the National Botanic Garden of Israel on Mount Scopus (which still exists separately), it began planting in 1954 and covers about 120–150 dunams (30–35 acres). The garden houses more than 6,000–7,000 living, labeled plant species from around the world, arranged in phytogeographic sections that recreate miniature landscapes of Southern Africa, Europe, North America, Australia, Southwest and Central Asia.
The Mediterranean, plus special areas such as a tropical greenhouse (a jungle with climbing trees and epiphytes and giant banana plants), a desert greenhouse, and a Japanese wing with over 150 bonsai trees—the largest concentrated bonsai collection in the world.
