Montfort Fortress
Israel, Israel
Montfort Fortress in Israel, also known as Montfort Castle or Starkenberg, was built in the early 13th century and served as the principal stronghold of the Teutonic Knights, a monastic military order during the Crusades.
Located on a narrow, steep ridge in the Upper Galilee region, the castle's architecture is an exemplary spur castle with its defenses focused on the vulnerable eastern side where the ridge joins the hill. It featured a large D-shaped keep, two ditches for added defense, an elongated two-story main building, and a three-story administrative structure.
The castle served as a headquarters, archive, and treasury for the Teutonic Order and was fortified significantly following funds raised from European pilgrims. In 1271, the fortress was besieged and taken by the Mamluk army led by Baibars, marking the end of Crusader control.
The castle remains an impressive ruin today, notable for its military architectural design adapted to the natural terrain and its historical significance as a center of the Teutonic Knights' activities in the Holy Land.
