Verified John's Castle

Podivín, Czechia, Czech Republic (Czechia)

John's Castle near Podivín in Czechia is an early 19th-century Gothic Revival hunting lodge built between 1801 and 1810 by the Liechtenstein family.

Designed by architect Joseph Hardtmuth, it was conceived as a romantic artificial ruin to enhance the landscape of the Lednice-Valtice Cultural Landscape, now a UNESCO World Heritage site. The castle served as a meeting point for nobility before hunts and was used for hunting banquets and festivities.

The castle's design features four uniquely planned towers connected by perimeter walls with balconies, enclosing a main building that includes representative state rooms and the large Knight’s Hall used for gatherings. Built on a reinforced platform due to unstable subsoil and constructed of stone sourced locally, the castle replicates medieval English castle ruins with detailed architectural features.

Today, it is accessible to visitors who can explore its towers and enjoy panoramic views from the south tower, with surrounding forest trails offering nature walks. The site is notable for its blend of historical architectural fantasy and natural beauty within the protected Lednice-Valtice area.
