The Justinianic Fortress of Konjuh, known archaeologically as Golemo Gradište, is a late antique fortified settlement near the village of Konjuh in eastern North Macedonia's Kriva Valley, serving as the second-largest city in the Roman province of Dardania after Scupi (modern Skopje). Built or significantly strengthened in the mid-6th century during Emperor Justinian I's defensive program against Slavic and Avar invasions, it occupied a strategic ridgeline overlooking farmland and probable iron mines, with an acropolis fortress, lower city structures, churches, and evidence of earthquakes and rebuilding up to the 7th century. Excavated since the 1930s and extensively since the 1970s by experts like Ivan Mikulčić and Carolyn Snively, it reveals a prosperous economic, administrative, and religious hub that declined amid barbarian pressures. Today, the ruins highlight Byzantine military architecture in the Balkans amid remote rural terrain.
