Kajaani Castle
Brahenkatu, Finland
Kajaani Castle in Finland is a granite fortress built in the early 17th century on an island in the Kajaani River. Construction began in 1604 by order of King Charles IX of Sweden to protect the strategically important Kainuu region from Russian threats.
The castle, the northernmost stone castle in Europe, was partly completed by 1619 and served as a military stronghold, prison, and administrative center. It reached its peak under Count Per Brahe the Younger in the mid-1600s, around when the town of Kajaani was founded nearby. However, during the Great Northern War, Russian forces besieged and destroyed the castle in 1716.
Since then, only roofless ruins remain, but the site has been preserved with restoration efforts and archaeological interest. Kajaani Castle symbolizes Sweden's northern frontier defense and Finland's complex history between Swedish and Russian rule.
