Kalmar Castle, located in Kalmar on Sweden's southeast coast overlooking Kalmarsund, originated as a 12th-century defensive tower built around 1180 to protect the harbor from pirates.

Expanded into a full fortress by the late 13th century under King Magnus Ladulås, it hosted the pivotal 1397 Kalmar Union signing between Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, later becoming a Renaissance palace under Vasa kings Gustav Vasa, Erik XIV, and Johan III in the 16th century with uniform towers, square windows, and opulent interiors like gilded throne halls. 

Declining after the 1658 Treaty of Roskilde shifted borders, it served as a prison and granary before 19th-20th century restorations by architects like Helgo Zettervall returned its grandeur, now operating as a museum with guided tours, exhibitions, and summer events.
