Karlštejn Castle is a striking Gothic fortress perched on a rocky hill about 30 kilometers southwest of Prague in the Central Bohemia region of the Czech Republic.

It was founded in 1348 by Czech King and Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV primarily as a secure storage place for royal treasures, holy relics, and the Czech crown jewels, patterned after the image of the Heavenly Jerusalem. The castle is built in a stepped layout, with the Great Tower at the top once guarding the most valuable regalia, and the lower levels housing the Imperial Palace, chapels, and the deep castle well.

Its most famous interior is the Chapel of the Holy Cross, richly decorated with gilded vaults, frescoes, and 129 unique wooden panels by Master Theodoric, making it one of the jewels of Czech medieval art. Today Karlštejn is one of the most visited castles in the country, easily reached as a day trip from Prague and often described as a symbolic monument to Czech statehood and medieval kingship.
