The Kelimutu Lakes, perched atop Mount Kelimutu in central Flores, East Nusa Tenggara, are among Indonesia’s most surreal and spiritually charged natural wonders. This trio of volcanic crater lakes—Tiwu Ata Bupu (Lake of Old People), Tiwu Nuwa Muri Koo Fai (Lake of Young Men and Maidens), and Tiwu Ata Polo (Bewitched or Enchanted Lake)—is famed for its ever-changing colors, which can shift from turquoise to green, red, black, or even chocolate brown due to complex volcanic and chemical processes beneath the surface.

Beyond their geological intrigue, the lakes hold deep cultural significance for the local Lio people, who believe each lake is a resting place for different types of souls. Offerings are still made at the site during annual ceremonies, reinforcing its sacred status.

Visitors typically base themselves in the nearby village of Moni and make the pre-dawn journey to the summit to catch the lakes at sunrise, when their colors are most vivid and the surrounding mists lend an ethereal quality to the landscape.
