King Bhishma Chand chose this elevated location after being impressed by the area's natural vantage points during a hunting expedition. The fort marked the consolidation of the Chand dynasty's rule in Kumaon, transitioning the capital from Champawat to Almora. It is an important symbol of Chand architectural and military prowess, featuring strong stone walls and a commanding presence over the surrounding valleys.

The fort is also historically notable as the site where King Bhishma Chand was assassinated by a local rival. Today, Khagmara Fort stands as a monument to the rich martial and cultural history of the Kumaon region and draws visitors with its panoramic views and heritage significance.
