Pithoragarh Fort
Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand, India
Pithoragarh Fort, also known as London Fort or Baulaki Fort, is a historic hilltop fort located on the outskirts of Pithoragarh town in Uttarakhand, India. It was built in 1789 by the Gorkhas after they invaded the region, although some records attribute its origins to the Chand dynasty period under ruler Peeru Alias Prithwi Gusain.
The fort sits at an altitude of approximately 1,650 meters, offering panoramic views of the surrounding Soar Valley and the Himalayas. Constructed with thick stone walls about 6-7 feet high, it has 152 firing holes designed for defense. Throughout history, the fort has played a strategic military role and was used by the British as an administrative center and prison during their rule.
Although now in a dilapidated condition, it stands as a symbol of Kumaon's rich historical and cultural heritage, attracting visitors interested in history, architecture, and scenic mountain views. Efforts are underway to preserve and develop the fort, including plans to add a museum to promote tourism.
