Kurumbera Fort
Gaganeswar, West Bengal, India
Kurumbera Fort is a medieval structure located in Gaganeshwar village near Keshiari in West Bengal, approximately 27 kilometers from Kharagpur. Built between 1438 and 1469 by the Gajapati king of Odisha, Kapilendra Deva, the fort is noted for its architectural style that resembles ancient Odisha temples, featuring a large courtyard surrounded by a pillared corridor and three spherical domes over a platform.
The fort later saw additions during the Mughal era by Muhammad Tahir under Emperor Aurangzeb, including a triple-domed mosque structure with floral designs. Despite being called a fort, it lacks typical military defensive features such as storage for weapons, layered walls, bastions, or secret exits, suggesting it was likely designed for public gatherings or religious purposes.
Now preserved by the Archaeological Survey of India under the Ancient Monuments Act, Kurumbera Fort remains a significant historical site reflecting the cultural and architectural blending of the Odisha and Mughal periods, though much of it is in ruins. The site is accessible via Keshiari and attracts visitors interested in history and heritage.
