Kilbline Castle is a fortified 16th-century tower house near Bennettsbridge in County Kilkenny, and is considered one of the better-preserved examples of this type of Irish medieval residence. Originally associated with the Comerford family, the castle later passed through several owners, including the Shortall, Candler, and Ryan families, reflecting centuries of changing fortunes and land ownership. Built of limestone and rising four storeys high, the castle features classic defensive elements such as gun loops, a machicolation above the entrance, a bartizan turret, and thick stone walls. Inside, it contained living quarters, storage areas, fireplaces, and private chambers, demonstrating how tower houses served as both homes and strongholds. Over the centuries, Kilbline Castle was adapted for domestic and agricultural use, helping to ensure its survival. Today, it remains a protected historic structure in private ownership and is valued as an important example of Ireland’s late medieval architectural heritage.
