Kilbolane Castle

Kilbolane Castle is a historic ruined fortress located on Kilbolane Hill near the village of Milford in County Cork, Ireland. Founded in the 13th century by Norman settlers, it was part of a chain of defensive castles built to protect Norman-controlled territory in the region. Over the centuries, the castle passed through the hands of several prominent families, including the Fitzgibbons, and underwent significant renovations. Its design featured strong curtain walls, circular defensive towers, and a surrounding moat, reflecting classic Norman military architecture. Much of the castle was destroyed during conflicts in the 17th century, leaving only parts of the structure standing today. The surviving ruins, including sections of the curtain wall and two circular towers, remain an important reminder of medieval Ireland’s Norman heritage. The site is protected as a National Monument and is cared for by Ireland’s Office of Public Works.
