Kilcoe Castle
Ireland, Ireland
Kilcoe Castle is a striking 15th century tower house located on a small island in Roaringwater Bay, County Cork, in southwest Ireland. Built around 1458 by the MacCarthy clan, it served as a fortified residence and an important coastal stronghold during a turbulent period of Irish history. The castle was besieged during the early 1600s and eventually surrendered to English forces in 1603, becoming one of the last strongholds in Munster to fall. After centuries of decline and ruin, the castle was extensively restored in the late 1990s and early 2000s by actor Jeremy Irons, who transformed it into a private residence while preserving many of its historic features. Today, Kilcoe Castle is known for its distinctive reddish exterior, its picturesque waterfront setting, and its reputation as one of Ireland’s most beautifully restored medieval castles.
