Killeen Castle is a historic castle near Dunsany in County Meath, standing on a site that has been occupied since the late 12th century. Originally built by the Norman knight Geoffrey de Cusack around 1181, it later became the ancestral home of the Plunkett family, Earls of Fingall, who owned the estate for more than 500 years. Over the centuries, the castle evolved from a medieval fortress into a grand Gothic-style residence. Major rebuilding and redesign work during the 18th and 19th centuries created much of the impressive structure seen today. Although the castle was severely damaged by fire in 1981, it was later restored as part of a major redevelopment of the estate. Today, Killeen Castle is one of County Meath’s most significant heritage landmarks, known for its rich history, elegant architecture, extensive estate grounds, and championship golf course. Its story reflects more than 800 years of Irish noble, architectural, and cultural history.
