Kilgobbin Castle is a medieval tower house located near Stepaside in south Dublin, Ireland. Built around 1476 by the Walsh family, it formed part of a chain of defensive fortifications along the edge of “The Pale,” the area around Dublin controlled by the English Crown. The castle was strategically positioned to help guard the southern approach to Dublin from raids coming through the Wicklow Mountains. The site has a long history, with archaeological evidence showing human activity there centuries before the castle was constructed. Over time, the castle changed hands several times and played a role in the conflicts of 17th century Ireland. By the early 1800s it had fallen into ruin, and parts of the structure collapsed. Today, the remains of Kilgobbin Castle still stand as an important example of a late medieval Irish tower house. Visitors can see its surviving granite walls, defensive features, and traces of its former design, while local folklore adds tales of ghosts said to haunt the ruins.
