Killua Castle is a historic castle and estate near Clonmellon in County Westmeath, Ireland. Originally associated with lands granted to the Chapman family in the 17th century, the present castle was built around 1780 and later transformed with Gothic-style towers and battlements, giving it the romantic appearance it retains today. The castle is closely linked to several notable historical figures and traditions. The estate contains the Raleigh Obelisk, erected to commemorate the local tradition that Sir Walter Raleigh planted some of the first potatoes introduced to Ireland there. The Chapman family of Killua also had connections to T. E. Lawrence, better known as Lawrence of Arabia. After falling into disrepair during the 20th century, Killua Castle underwent extensive restoration and has been returned to its former grandeur. Today, it is known for its striking architecture, landscaped grounds, rich history, and commitment to heritage, conservation, and sustainable land management.
