Kirkuk Citadel
Kirkuk, Iraq
The Kirkuk Citadel is a historic fortified settlement located in the center of Kirkuk, Iraq, and is widely regarded as the oldest part of the city. Built on a prominent mound rising about 40 meters above the surrounding area, the site has been inhabited for thousands of years and contains layers of history dating back to ancient Mesopotamian civilizations. Archaeological discoveries indicate that the area was occupied as early as the second millennium BCE. Over the centuries, the citadel became a multicultural urban center that housed homes, markets, mosques, Sufi lodges, and places of worship for Christian and Jewish communities. It is also associated with traditions linking the site to the Prophet Daniel. The citadel reflects the diverse cultural and religious heritage that has shaped Kirkuk throughout its long history. Although parts of the citadel were damaged or demolished in modern times, many historic structures, including mosques, tombs, and traditional buildings, still survive. Because of its archaeological, architectural, and cultural importance, the site was added to UNESCO's Tentative World Heritage List in 2021 and remains one of Iraq’s most significant historical landmarks.
