Knockabbey Castle, near Ardee in County Louth, is a historic estate whose origins date back to 1399, when it was built as a tower house known as Thomastown Castle by the Bellew family.

Over the centuries, the castle was expanded and transformed from a medieval fortress into a substantial country residence, reflecting changing architectural styles and the status of its owners. The estate features elements from several periods, including medieval, Georgian, Gothic Revival, and Victorian design. In the 19th century, the property was renamed Knockabbey, and major additions were made to both the house and its landscaped grounds.

Although part of the estate was damaged by fire during the Irish Civil War in 1923, it was rebuilt and later restored. Today, Knockabbey Castle is known for its historic architecture, beautifully maintained gardens, ornamental water features, and long association with prominent local families, making it one of County Louth’s notable heritage properties.
