Knockelly Castle is a historic tower house near Fethard in County Tipperary, Ireland, with origins dating to around the mid-15th century. It was built by the Butler family, one of the most powerful noble families in Ireland, and served as a fortified residence overlooking the surrounding countryside. The castle features a substantial tower house enclosed by a defensive bawn wall with turrets and lookout points. Over the centuries, it was modified to provide greater comfort, with larger windows, fireplaces, and other improvements while retaining many of its medieval defensive features. Today, Knockelly Castle is recognized as an important example of Irish medieval architecture and heritage. Despite periods of decline, much of the structure survives, and ongoing conservation efforts have helped preserve this remarkable landmark and its centuries of history.
