Koure Giraffe Reserve

Near Kouré, Tillabéri Region, Niger

---

The Kouré Giraffe Reserve, located near Kouré in Niger’s Tillabéri Region, is one of the country’s most famous wildlife destinations and the last stronghold of the endangered West African giraffe.

Situated about 60 kilometers from Niamey, the reserve protects a unique population of giraffes that roam freely through the Sahelian landscape of shrubs, acacia trees, and open savanna. The reserve is renowned for its conservation success. After the giraffe population declined to only a few dozen animals in the 1980s, protection efforts involving local communities and conservation groups helped the population recover significantly.

Today, visitors come to Kouré Giraffe Reserve to observe giraffes in their natural habitat, often at close range, while learning about the region’s wildlife and conservation programs. Its combination of rare animals, accessible location, and important conservation achievements makes it one of Niger’s most celebrated natural attractions.
