Lake Chad (Partially in Niger)

Southeastern Niger, Niger

---

Lake Chad, located in the southeastern corner of Niger and shared with Chad, Nigeria, and Cameroon, is one of Africa’s most important freshwater lakes.

It supports millions of people through fishing, farming, livestock grazing, and trade, making it a vital resource for communities across the region. The lake is known for its seasonal fluctuations and changing size. Although it was once one of Africa’s largest lakes, its area decreased significantly during the late 20th century because of droughts, climate variability, and increased water use. Despite these challenges, it remains a crucial wetland ecosystem rich in fish, birdlife, and other wildlife.

In Niger, towns such as N'guigmi and Bosso are closely connected to the lake and depend on its resources. Today, Lake Chad remains both an ecological treasure and a lifeline for the people of the Sahel, highlighting the importance of sustainable management and regional cooperation.
