La Boca is a vibrant, colorful neighborhood in southeast Buenos Aires, famous for its brightly painted corrugated-metal houses, cobblestone pedestrian street called El Caminito, and strong European immigrant heritage, particularly from Genoa, Italy.

This historic port district became a cultural melting pot in the 19th and 20th centuries when working-class immigrants settled in cramped boarding houses called “conventillos” and allegedly painted their homes using leftover paint from ships at the dock. The area is considered the birthplace of tango, with street dancers and musicians performing regularly, and it also houses La Bombonera, the iconic “chocolate box” stadium of the world-renowned soccer club Boca Juniors, where legends like Diego Maradona and Carlos Tevez began their careers.

Visitors can explore art galleries, museums like Fundacion PROA featuring contemporary exhibitions, and spots honoring local artist Benito Quinquela Martín, while enjoying traditional Argentine grill food in lively cafés. Although La Boca is a top tourist attraction, it’s advisable to stay in the main crowded areas and avoid backstreets, especially at night, for safety.
