Lackeen Castle is a well-preserved medieval tower house located near Lorrha in County Tipperary, Ireland. Originally a stronghold of the O'Kennedy family, an important Gaelic ruling dynasty in the region, the castle dates largely from the 16th century, although the site itself has much earlier origins. Built on a rocky outcrop and enclosed by defensive walls known as a bawn, the castle was designed to serve as both a residence and a fortress. Its surviving features, including battlements, defensive entrances, and stone stairways, provide an excellent example of Irish tower-house architecture. Lackeen Castle is also famous for its connection to the Lorrha Missal, an important early medieval manuscript that was discovered hidden within the castle. Today, the castle is recognized as a National Monument and remains one of County Tipperary’s most significant historic sites, valued for both its architecture and its links to Ireland’s cultural heritage.
