Läckö Castle
Sweden, Sweden
Läckö Castle, perched on Kållandsö island in Lake Vänern near Lidköping in Västergötland, Sweden, originated as a medieval fortress founded in 1298 by Bishop Brynolf Algotsson of Skara to defend the diocese and serve pilgrims.
Transferred to the Swedish crown after the 1527 Reformation, it was granted to Field Marshal Jacob De la Gardie in 1615, whose son Magnus Gabriel transformed it in the mid-17th century into a grand Baroque palace with four floors, ornate frescoes, limestone details from nearby Kinnekulle, and lavish interiors like the Banquet Hall for 55-course feasts.
Now a state-owned museum, it offers guided tours of its preserved rooms, sensuous gardens, and medieval vaults, embodying Sweden's era of great power amid stunning natural surroundings.
