Leintz-Gatzaga
Spain, Spain
Leintz-Gatzaga is a small rural municipality in Gipuzkoa province, Basque Country, northern Spain, founded in 1331 and historically centered on profitable salt mines that drove its medieval economy along the ancient Camino Real trade route linking Castile to the coast.
Nestled in a steep, wooded valley near the Deba River's source at 455 meters elevation, its compact walled old town of four stone streets preserves coats of arms, palaces, and facades from its prosperous era, despite repeated burnings in 1334, 1371, 1492, and 1498.
Salt production declined after 19th-century road and rail bypasses, leading to demographic shrinkage to around 250 residents, though it retains cultural landmarks like the Salt Museum and Sanctuary of Santa María de Dorleta amid hiking-friendly highlands.
