Leixlip Castle is a historic Norman castle in the town of Leixlip, County Kildare, Ireland. Built around 1172 by Adam de Hereford, a follower of Strongbow, it is considered one of the earliest Norman castles in Ireland and has been continuously inhabited for more than 800 years. The castle stands on a rocky site overlooking the River Liffey near its junction with the Rye Water, a strategically important location since Viking times. Over the centuries, the castle has been owned by several notable families and figures, including the White and Conolly families, and it later became the residence of the first French ambassador to the Irish Free State. Since 1958, it has been associated with the Guinness family. Today, Leixlip Castle is renowned for its well-preserved medieval architecture, historic interiors, and attractive gardens, and it is open to visitors on selected dates.
