Lismore Castle is a magnificent historic castle overlooking the River Blackwater in the town of Lismore, County Waterford. Originally built in 1185 by Prince John, later King John of England, on the site of an earlier monastery, it has been continuously occupied for more than 800 years and is one of Ireland’s most important castles. Over the centuries, the castle was owned by notable figures including Sir Walter Raleigh and Richard Boyle, the 1st Earl of Cork, whose son Robert Boyle, often known as the father of modern chemistry, was born there in 1626. The castle was extensively rebuilt in the Gothic Revival style during the 19th century and remains the Irish residence of the Dukes of Devonshire. Today, Lismore Castle is renowned for its grand architecture, rich history, and beautiful gardens. Set above the Blackwater Valley, it is one of County Waterford’s most iconic landmarks and a celebrated blend of medieval heritage, aristocratic history, and scenic beauty.
