Listowel Castle is a prominent 15th-century Anglo-Norman fortress located in the center of Listowel, County Kerry, overlooking the River Feale. It was the stronghold of the Fitzmaurice family, Lords of Kerry, and is considered one of the finest surviving examples of medieval castle architecture in the county. The castle played a significant role in Irish history, particularly during the wars against Queen Elizabeth I. In 1600, it became the last major stronghold of the Fitzmaurice rebels and endured a lengthy siege before being captured by English forces under Sir Charles Wilmot. Today, two of the castle’s original towers and part of its curtain wall remain standing, reaching over 15 metres in height. Carefully restored and protected as a national monument, Listowel Castle is a popular heritage attraction that offers visitors an insight into medieval life, warfare, and the rich history of County Kerry.
