Lohort Castle is a historic fortified tower house located near Cecilstown in County Cork, Ireland. Built around the late 15th century by the McCarthy family, it is known for its impressive five-storey structure, thick defensive walls, rounded corners, and a surrounding moat that once protected the castle. Over the centuries, the castle witnessed major events in Irish history, including conflicts during the 17th century and attacks by Cromwellian forces. Although it was damaged and altered at different times, its strong construction helped it survive. In the 18th century, the Earl of Egmont renovated the building, and further changes were made in the 19th century. The castle was burned during the Irish Civil War in 1922 but was later restored. Today, Lohort Castle remains a striking landmark and private residence, admired for its blend of medieval defensive architecture and later residential modifications, making it an important part of County Cork’s heritage.
