Lopera Castle
Lopera, Spain, Spain
Lopera Castle is a 13th-century fortress in Lopera, Jaén province, Spain, built by the Military Order of Calatrava on the ruins of an earlier Muslim fortification to defend the frontier. It features a pentagonal outer wall with five towers—two square, three semi-circular—and a main gate under a double arch flanked by cylindrical towers, enclosing an inner bailey with the twin square keeps of San Miguel and Santa María connected by walls. The San Miguel tower shows Civil War damage and now hosts a Battle of Lopera museum, while Santa María's lower room became a 16th-century Gothic chapel; restored after mid-20th-century use as a winery, it stands as a prime example of Calatrava military architecture and part of Jaén's Castles and Battles Route.
