Lynch’s Castle is one of Galway’s most famous medieval buildings, located on Shop Street in the heart of the city. Built by the influential Lynch family, one of the powerful “Tribes of Galway,” during the late 15th or early 16th century, it originally served as a fortified townhouse that reflected the family’s wealth and status. Today, the building operates as an Allied Irish Bank branch while retaining much of its historic character. Its impressive stone façade features decorative carvings, coats of arms, gargoyles, and Gothic architectural details that make it one of the best-preserved medieval townhouses in Ireland. Over the centuries, the castle has been restored and adapted for modern use, allowing visitors to appreciate a unique blend of Galway’s rich history and contemporary city life.
