Macenas Blockhouse
Spain, Spain
Macenas Blockhouse is a well-preserved 18th-century horseshoe-shaped military tower, known as Torre de Macenas or Castillo de Macenas, located on Macenas Beach near El Agua del Medio south of Mojácar in Almería province, Andalusia, Spain. Built in the second half of the 1700s as a coastal defense fortification, it features sturdy stone walls with a sloped base, designed to hold two 24-pound cannons on its upper terrace, while lower levels housed munitions, a kitchen, and living quarters accessible originally by a high door with a rope ladder. By 1830 it was disarmed and guarded by a small crew, later used by customs officers with an adjacent barracks by 1873, and saw action in the Spanish Civil War when a ground-level door was added; today it stands in good condition with free exterior access amid stunning coastal views ideal for history enthusiasts and photographers.
