Magherabeg refers to more than one place in Ireland, but the most notable is Magherabeg Clachan in Oughterard, County Connemara, Galway, a small historic village or settlement known as a “clachan,” which is a traditional type of nucleated Irish rural cluster of stone cottages dating back to medieval times.

This clachan sits in a small, sheltered valley on fertile land surrounded by mountain pasture and bogland, with several original single-storey cottages still standing today, three of which remain occupied as residences while others are ruins or used as agricultural out-buildings.

The area reflects the ancient rundale farming system where families shared land and practiced “booleying,” moving livestock to summer pastures, and includes a charming historical feature: three concrete steps leading down to the river that locals once used to fetch water and wash clothes since no well existed there.

Another Magherabeg exists in County Wicklow as Magherabeg Estates, and there is also Magherabeg Beach in Leinster on the Irish Sea, about 50 km from Dublin, which ranks as the top beach among 56 in the province and offers activities for families.
