Mallow Castle
Republic of Ireland, Ireland
Mallow Castle is a historic castle complex in the town of Mallow, County Cork, Ireland. The site has a long history dating back to 1185, when King John ordered the construction of the first castle there. Today, it includes the ruins of a 13th-century castle, a 16th-century fortified house, and a later mansion set within attractive gardens and parkland. The most prominent surviving structure is the fortified house built in the late 16th century by Sir Thomas Norreys, Lord President of Munster. Designed in an early Jacobean style, it combined defensive features such as towers and gun loops with greater comfort and larger living spaces, reflecting the changing nature of castle architecture in Ireland. The castle endured several attacks during the Irish Confederate Wars and the Williamite War, suffering significant damage before eventually falling into ruin. The Jephson family, who owned the estate for nearly 400 years, later built a new mansion nearby rather than restoring the old fortified house. Today, Mallow Castle is a National Monument and a popular heritage attraction, known for its historic ruins, riverside setting, landscaped grounds, and important role in the history of County Cork.
