Malmö Castle
Malmö, Sweden
Malmö Castle, also known as Malmöhus, is Scandinavia’s oldest preserved Renaissance castle, located on an island in Malmö, Sweden.
Originally established in 1434 by King Eric of Pomerania as a medieval fortress to defend the Öresund Sound, the current castle was largely rebuilt between 1526 and 1539 under King Christian III of Denmark.
It features Renaissance military architecture with thick brick walls, defensive towers, and a moat. Over the centuries, the castle played a strategic role in Danish-Swedish conflicts and later served various functions including a prison until the early 20th century. Today, Malmö Castle houses several museums, including the Malmö Art Museum and the Natural History Museum, preserving the region’s cultural and historical heritage within its historic walls.
