Malpica of Tagus's Castle
Malpica de Tajo, Spain, Spain
The Castillo de Malpica de Tajo, known as Malpica of Tagus's Castle, is a rare continuously inhabited medieval fortress in the village of Malpica de Tajo, Toledo province, Castilla-La Mancha, Spain, overlooking the Tajo River.
Originating as a 10th-century Arab stronghold, it was rebuilt in brick by the Gómez de Toledo family in the 14th century using distinctive Toledan Mudéjar bonding, evolving from a defensive site with corner towers, machicolations, and merlons into a palatial residence through 17th-century reforms that added windows.
Protected on one side by the river acting as a natural moat, the square-plan castle remains private property, viewable only from outside amid scenic river valley views.
