Manorhamilton Castle is a 17th-century fortress in the town of Manorhamilton, County Leitrim, and is the landmark from which the town takes its name. It was built between 1634 and 1636 by Sir Frederick Hamilton, a Scottish planter who received land in the area during the Plantation of Leitrim. The castle played an important role during the turbulent conflicts of the 1640s, successfully resisting several attacks during the Irish Rebellion of 1641. However, it was ultimately captured and burned in 1652 during the Cromwellian era, after which it was partially rebuilt and later used as military barracks. Today, the restored ruins form the centrepiece of Manorhamilton’s heritage attractions. Visitors can explore the castle grounds and exhibitions that tell the story of the region, making it one of County Leitrim’s most significant historical landmarks.
