The Mar Mattai Monastery, located on Mount Alfaf near Mosul in Nineveh Governorate, Iraq, is one of the oldest Christian monasteries in the world and the oldest monastery of the Syriac Orthodox Church. Founded in 363 CE by Mar Mattai (Saint Matthew the Hermit), it has served as an important center of worship, learning, and monastic life for more than sixteen centuries. Perched high above the Nineveh Plains, the monastery is renowned for its historic churches, ancient manuscripts, religious relics, and breathtaking views. Despite surviving wars, invasions, and periods of hardship, it remains an active religious site and a powerful symbol of Iraq’s rich Christian heritage and cultural resilience.
