Marid Castle
Al-Jawf, Saudi Arabia
Marid Castle is a historic fortress located in Dumat al-Jandal, within the Al-Jawf region of northern Saudi Arabia. It sits on top of a hill about 620 meters above sea level, making it easy to view the surrounding land and spot any approaching travelers or enemies. The castle has played an important role in the area's history for many centuries.
The origins of Marid Castle go back to the first century AD. Archaeological evidence, including pottery and building remains, links the castle to the Nabataean period. The first recorded mention is from the third century, when Queen Zenobia of Palmyra tried to capture the fortress but failed. Because of this, she famously said, “Marid has rebelled, and Ablaq has glorified,” highlighting the strength and reputation of Marid Castle.
The design of Marid Castle is impressive and practical. It is built mostly from stone at the base and mud bricks for the upper parts. The castle was originally rectangular but now has more of an oval shape. It has two main entrances, one in the south and the other in the north, near a tower. Four tall conical towers were added at different times and reach up to 12 meters high. Inside, there are two wells, guard rooms, places for archers, and lookout spots. Thick stone walls with many openings circle the castle, offering good protection and views for defenders.
Throughout history, the castle was a center of defense, an administrative base, and a home for local leaders. In the 7th century, it saw clashes between Islamic armies and local tribes. Later, the fortress was damaged by cannons in the 1800s and besieged at the start of the 1900s, showing its continued importance throughout the ages. Restoration projects in recent years have helped preserve the castle, adding features that let visitors explore its rich past.
