Marko's Towers - Markovi Kuli
Republic of Macedonia, North Macedonia
Marko's Towers, or Markovi Kuli, are the ruins of a medieval fortress located northwest of Prilep in North Macedonia, just above the Varoš neighborhood on a 120–180-meter-high hill surrounded by steep granite slopes. Dating to the 13th-14th centuries with earlier late antique foundations, the site features well-preserved ramparts about one meter thick built of limestone mortar, an acropolis with internal walls that once housed the palace of Serbian King Vukašin and his son Prince Marko Mrnjavčević, a double north gate, guardhouse, three southern towers, and rock-cut graves used as a refuge from Turkish raids. Named after Prince Marko, the accessible ruins span a 3.6-hectare settlement and offer panoramic views, symbolizing Prilep's defensive history with minimal garrison of around 40 soldiers.
