Mashhad Yahya Abul Qassem

Mosul, Nineveh Governorate, Iraq

Mashhad Yahya Abul Qassem, also known as the Mausoleum of Yahya Abu al-Qasim, was a historic shrine and mosque in Mosul, Nineveh Governorate, located on the banks of the Tigris River near the old city citadel. Built in 1239 under the ruler Badr al-Din Lu'lu', it was dedicated to Yahya ibn al-Qasim, a descendant of Ali ibn Abi Talib, and was one of Mosul’s most important medieval religious monuments. The shrine was especially renowned for its distinctive conical dome, intricate brickwork, glazed tile decorations, and fine examples of Seljuk-influenced architecture. Historians considered it one of the most beautifully decorated medieval tombs in Iraq and a significant part of Mosul’s architectural heritage. In 2014, the shrine was destroyed by ISIS during its campaign against historic religious and cultural sites in Mosul. Its loss was widely mourned as the destruction of a unique monument that had survived for nearly eight centuries and reflected the city’s rich religious and artistic history.
