Masmak Fortress
Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
Masmak Fortress, also known as Al Masmak Palace, is a historic mud‑brick fort in the ad‑Dirah area of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, built in the second half of the 19th century as a defensive stronghold in the Najdi architectural style.
Commissioned around 1865 and completed in 1895, it played a crucial role in Saudi history when King Abdulaziz Ibn Saud captured it in a daring raid in 1902, an event that marked the beginning of the modern unification of Saudi Arabia.
The fortress features thick clay walls, a central courtyard, four watchtowers, and a small mosque, and its main gate still bears the mark of a spear thrown during the 1902 attack. Converted into a museum in 1995, it now displays weapons, photographs, maps, and models that trace the history of the Saudi state and that battle, making it one of Riyadh’s most important cultural landmarks.
