Maynooth Castle is a historic Norman castle in the town of Maynooth, County Kildare, Ireland. Built in the early 13th century, it became the principal seat of the powerful FitzGerald family, Earls of Kildare, who played a major role in Irish politics for centuries. The castle was once one of the largest and wealthiest aristocratic residences in Ireland, featuring a substantial stone keep that served as both a fortress and a center of government and culture. The castle suffered severe damage during the 1535 siege that followed the rebellion of “Silken Thomas” FitzGerald, when English forces used artillery to breach its defenses. Although parts of it were later restored, further conflicts in the 17th century left much of the structure in ruins. Today, visitors can explore the surviving remains, including the keep and gatehouse, and view exhibitions that tell the story of the castle and the influential FitzGerald dynasty.
