It is one of Ireland's top 10 beaches and is usually not packed with people, making it a quiet spot for walking, gathering your thoughts, and enjoying wildlife. The beach has a gradual slope, which makes the water too shallow for serious swimming, and it features a large inlet that remains even at low tide called "Cockle Lake".

While Merrion Strand itself has little flora or fauna due to its coastal positioning, it is nationally important for migrating birds and connects to Sean Moore Park and the Irishtown Nature Reserve. The beach is kept very clean and offers good views, though as of June 2025, it was declassified as a bathing area after water quality was rated "poor" for five consecutive years.
