Mezquita de Almonaster La Real
Almonaster la Real, Spain, Spain
Mezquita de Almonaster la Real is a rare surviving 9th-10th century mosque from the Caliphate of Córdoba era, located within the castle walls atop Almonaster la Real in Huelva province, Spain, built on a 6th-century Visigothic basilica using spolia like Roman columns and capitals. Its trapezoidal plan features a T-shaped prayer hall with five unequal naves of brick horseshoe arches on reused supports, a rock-cut ablutions courtyard, and simple mihrab, reflecting rural Islamic architecture's rustic style. Converted to a Christian hermitage after the Reconquista with an added 18th-century apse dome bearing Latin Church father paintings, it stands as a National Monument blending Roman, Visigothic, and Islamic layers.
