Mikulov Castle is one of the most important historic landmarks in South Moravia, dominating the skyline of the town of Mikulov from a rocky hill near the Austrian border.

Its origins date back to the 13th century, when it served as a fortified castle guarding important trade and military routes. Over the centuries, the castle evolved from a medieval fortress into an elegant Renaissance and Baroque residence. It was owned by influential noble families, especially the Dietrichsteins, who transformed it into a cultural and political center with grand halls, a library, wine cellars, and impressive collections.

The castle suffered severe damage in a fire at the end of World War II but was carefully reconstructed in the 1950s. Today, it houses the Regional Museum of Mikulov, featuring exhibitions on local history, archaeology, and wine culture. Known for its striking architecture and panoramic views over Mikulov and the surrounding vineyards, Mikulov Castle remains one of the Czech Republic’s most visited and admired historic sites.
