Milltown Castle

Milltown Castle is a medieval fortified tower house located near Milltown in County Louth, Ireland. Built around the late 15th century, it is believed to have been constructed by the Gernon family and later passed to the Fortescue family through marriage. The castle is a tall Norman-style keep, standing about 55 feet (17 metres) high, with distinctive round corner towers and defensive features such as gun loops or arrow slits in its thick stone walls. Over the centuries, the castle remained inhabited until the mid-19th century and became part of the local farming landscape. Today, it survives as an impressive historic landmark that reflects Ireland’s medieval heritage and the defensive architecture of the period.
