Mogeely Castle is a historic ruined castle located near Conna in County Cork, Ireland. Built during the medieval period, its surviving remains sit on a low rise overlooking the River Bride and are enclosed by parts of a former defensive wall. Archaeological and architectural evidence suggests that elements of the structure may date back to the 13th century, with later additions and modifications made over the centuries. The castle played a role in several significant events in Irish history. It was associated with the powerful Earls of Desmond, later became part of Sir Walter Raleigh’s Munster plantation estates, and was involved in conflicts during the Tudor and Cromwellian periods. Historical records describe sieges, military attacks, and changes in ownership that reflected the turbulent history of the region. Today, Mogeely Castle survives as an atmospheric ruin and an important local heritage site. Although much of the original structure has disappeared, the remaining walls and archaeological evidence provide insight into medieval castle life and the history of east Cork.
