Monastery of Santa Maria de la Murta
Alzira, Spain, Spain
Monastery of Santa Maria de la Murta is a historic Hieronymite monastery founded in 1376 in the scenic La Murta Valley near Alzira, Valencia province, Spain, established by local knight Arnau de Serra for hermits following the order's rule under papal approval from Pope Gregory XI.
Construction began in 1401 with support from nearby Sant Jeroni de Cotalba, featuring a central church around a cloister, expanded through 15th-17th century donations from noble families like the Vich who funded a Renaissance church completed in 1623, ornate altarpiece, fortified Coloms tower, and cultural prominence visited by Saint Vincent Ferrer.
Closed during the 1835 Mendizábal confiscations with only 11 monks remaining, it fell into ruin after private sale in 1838, leaving evocative remnants of Gothic-Renaissance architecture, rock-hewn hermitage, and aqueduct amid overgrown nature now popular for hiking and historical exploration.
